Basil May launched his autobiography, Disappointments, Fellowship and Intense Gratitude, at Bokmakiri Books in Swellengrebel Street on Friday 24 January.
The function was well attended and there was excellent interaction between all those present. The interview with the author was adeptly conducted by Philip Bromley, the chairperson of the Swellendam Heritage and the designer of the May coat of arms.
The book includes aspects like his humble beginnings in Swellendam, overcoming adversity in Genadendal, tertiary studies, career highlights and involvement in Swellendam.
The next morning, he and his family took a tour of the town and visited Lind Street, May Street, Vollenhoven Street, the Bus Disaster Memorial, the May graves in Railton and the May coat of arms in the Main Road. The relatives appreciated the opportunity to visit these spots which are significant to the family.
The price of the book is R250 and it can be bought at Bokmakiri Books.
A second book launch will take place at the DNA Café in Langverwacht Road Kuils River, Cape Town on Saturday, 22 February at 14:00. The interview will be conducted by Dennis Cruywagen, journalist and author of The Spiritual Mandela.
