Karoo Art Hotel manager Zak Jansen confirmed this week that the hotel has stepped up to the plate by providing assistance in the organisation of this year’s Barrydale Art Meander (BAM) that is scheduled to take place between 15 and 19 December.
The brainchild of the late Shane Petzer, BAM is an annual celebration of the abundance of art and artistic people who reside in Barrydale.
During this week artists open their studios to the public as the town braces itself for an influx of tourists.
“Usually maps to the respective homes of the artists would be collected from the Magpie Studio across the road, but following the tragic passing of Shane it was suggested that the hotel becomes the new collection point,” Zak said.
Hotel’s owners Rick and Sue Melvill confirmed that, construction work permitting, they are investigating the possibility of displaying some local art in the hotel during BAM.
“The hotel is currently under construction and will only be fully operational in February, but we will gladly be the collection point for maps,” Zak added.

More good news is that the famous Net vir Pret Hand Puppet Parade will make a long awaited return – this one of a kind event had to be broadcast online last year due to Covid-19 restrictions – and the traditional lighting of the Christmas tree behind the Mapgie Studio will also take place.
Furthermore the Barrydale Analogue Photo Festival will hold between 10 and 20 December.
Finally, it was confirmed that the second edition of Barrydale Fight Night will take place on December 11 and that several local residents will again star in this white-collar boxing extravaganza/fundraiser.
