Fruitful Discussions Between Swellendam Municipal Leaders and Malgas Residents Association

Written by The Malagas Residents Association

The Malagas Residents Association (MRA) recently hosted Swellendam Municipal Manager, Anton Groenewald, and the CFO, Elmari Wasserman for what turned out to be a very encouraging meeting.

The visit emanated from previous meetings held with Groenewald to address concerns residents have.

The meeting took place amidst very wet conditions, which, according to the MRA notes, was in their favour.

The municipal delegates were taken to Area 1, Malgas Pont, Lemoentuin, Matjieskloof and Diepkloof and were well exposed to the poor condition of the access roads.

Along the route they inspected the slipway at the Pont, the refuse sites and also visited Nuwedorp.

The key concerns which the MRA addressed were the following:

– The access roads

– Refuse collection points

– Public Slipway

– Fire prevention

– Security

– Nuwedorp Future

“This was a very successful exercise as we received a response the following day with actions assigned by the Municipal Manager to his managers,”the MRA said in a statement.

“Projects shall be prioritised by residents for inclusion in the Budget 2022-2023. The MRA shall communicate with you in the very near future on the process.”

Certain projects such as the refuse points, security cameras, fire prevention will be implemented in the short term while the access roads will be funded over a three year period commencing 2022.

Residents were assured that it will not just be a quick and dirty road scraping exercise. The Municipal Manager is in support of longer term solution.

A feasible alternative for Nuwedorp is under investigation.
